Crypto Position Size Calculator

With 10 USDT, 2% risk per trade and a 5% stop, you can lose 0.2 USDT. Position size is 4 USDT (0.00005 BTC at the indicative BTC/USDT quote). Formula: position = (account × risk%) / stop%.

Position size calculator

Risk percent is how much of the account you can lose. Stop distance is how far the stop is from entry. They are two different numbers.

Use entry and stop prices instead of a percent

Stop % = |entry − stop| / entry × 100. This overwrites the stop-loss distance field.

Result

Risk 0.2 USDT (2% of 10). Position 4 USDT ≈ 0.00005 BTC with a 5% stop.

How to size a trade

  1. Decide the account in USDT. Example: 10 USDT.
  2. Decide the fraction you can lose if the stop hits. Example: 2% → 0.20 USDT risk.
  3. Measure the stop as a percent of entry (or from two prices). Example: 5% below entry.
  4. Position notional = risk ÷ stop% = 0.20 / 0.05 = 4 USDT.
  5. Quantity = notional ÷ coin USDT price. Margin at leverage L = notional / L.

If the stop distance equals the risk percent (both 2%), the notional equals the account. A tighter stop than the risk percent needs more than 1× notional vs equity. Fees, spread and liquidation rules on a venue are not included. The output is a reference size, not a trade instruction.

Worked numbers

Account 10 USDT, risk 2% → 0.20 USDT at risk. A 5% stop means the market can move 5% against you. 0.20 / 0.05 = 4 USDT notional. At 1× that is a 4 USDT spot position, which fits a 10 USDT account. At 10× the isolated margin would be 0.40 USDT. If the stop were 1% instead of 5%, notional would be 20 USDT (2× the account) and would need margin trading.

FAQ
How do I calculate position size from a stop loss?
Risk amount = account × risk percent. Position notional = risk amount ÷ stop-loss distance percent. Example: 10 USDT, 2% risk, 5% stop → 0.20 / 0.05 = 4 USDT position.
Is a 2% stop the same as risking 2% of the account?
No. Risk percent is how much of the account you accept to lose. Stop distance is how far the stop sits from entry. When both are 2%, notional equals the account. A tighter stop needs a larger position for the same dollar risk.
How much margin do I need?
On spot, the notional is the capital. On margin, required margin ≈ notional / leverage. If notional is larger than equity, the size does not fit a spot account.
Does this place a trade?
No. It is an educational sizing example, not a recommendation to trade and not financial advice. Venues add spread, fees, funding and liquidation rules.
Is this financial advice?
No. This site does not recommend buying, selling or holding any asset. The calculator only applies the formula position = (account × risk%) / stop% to an indicative USDT price.
Which coin price is used?
The calculator uses the same cached coin/USDT pair rate as the rest of the site, about one minute old, labelled stale if a fresh quote is unavailable.
